BIOGRAPHY
mid-1970’s
Born in Svishtov, Bulgaria
Name at birth: Attila Hasanov Mehmedov Family background: of Turkish
descent but residing in Bulgaria with Bulgarian citizenship
1981-1988
Family moved to Libya. 1984 to 1988: attended the
Oil Companies’
School, an international school primarily for the children of expats
working in Libya.
mid-1980’s
Due to efforts by the Bulgarian communist regime to erase the identities
of the Turkish minority in Bulgaria (primarily through a campaign to
change the names of ethnic Turks to Slavic names), family sought asylum
and decided to move to Canada via Turkey; parents adopted family name of Ataner.
1988
Family emigrated to Canada and settled in Burlington, Ontario. From
1988-1993 attended Nelson High School.
1993-1997
Attended McGill University in
Montreal, Quebec. Obtained BA (honours) in Philosophy.
September, 1993
Met future wife, Vanessa Kee.
late-1990’s
Attended McMaster University in
Hamilton, Ontario. Undertook studies in philosophy toward MA degree.
early-2000’s
Attended University of Toronto
Faculty of Law and obtained JD degree.
August 23, 2003
Married Vanessa Kee.

Joined Blaney
McMurtry LLP, first as student-at-law and currently as associate
lawyer.
